Careers at Coach House

Internship Opportunity

Coach House Books is looking for an enthusiastic, imaginative, very very organized intern.

The ideal candidate will be a critical, curious reader interested in all aspects of independent publishing. They will be meticulous in keeping our metadata up to date and will be a skilled, precise proofreader and fact-checker of marketing copy and the occasional manuscript. They will understand the kind of books Coach House publishes and be able to assess submissions of literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry on that basis. They will be flexible enough to tackle a wide range of tasks to assist the rest of the staff, including helping out at events, and detail-oriented enough to enter corrections and keep sales information and contributor agreements organized.

Duties include:

-       Inputting, uploading, and updating our metadata on two platforms
-       Reading and assessing some submissions
-       Managing contributor agreements on two anthologies
-       Some proofreading and fact-checking of marketing materials and possibly books
-       Helping out at book launches and events
-       Entering changes in layout files
-       Some straightforward monthly bookkeeping tasks
-       Miscellaneous administrative tasks as needed by the Editorial Director

Good organizational skills are key. Some training in copy-editing or proofreading would be an asset, as would familiarity with small-press publishing in Canada; enthusiasm for learning these things, however, is our primary consideration.

This is a full-time salaried contract position for one year, to be paid a total of $37,440 minus government deductions. It is a primarily remote job, but the candidate would need to be able to attend Toronto events on weekends and evenings and occasional in-person meetings at our office in Toronto (which we regret is not accessible).

This internship is an excellent opportunity to see how indie publishing works; Coach House has a small staff and the intern will have a chance to see how all the different parts of the process work. There is a possibility that the contract may be extended.

Please note that this internship is supported by the Canada Book Fund, and the intern must be a member of one of CBF’s Priority Groups, which includes Indigenous and racialized people as well as members of official language minority communities. We hate to ask, but please identify yourself in your cover letter.

To apply, please send your resume and cover letter in a single document (PDF, Word, or rich-text format) to jobs@chbooks.com. Please include a list of your three favourite books and why you’ve chosen them, as well as a list of your three favourite publishers.

We will be accepting applications until May 17, 2024, at midnight.
